symptoms

The adrenal glands are small glands, but they have a great influence on the body. They produce hormones that affect blood pressure, metabolism, stress response, as well as salt and water balance in the body. As soon as their function is impaired - for example due to a tumor - various difficulties can occur.

The most common symptoms of adrenal disorders

It always depends on the type of specific disease:

Fluctuations or persistently high blood pressure

  • Other pressure attacks without a clear cause (often at night or after stress)
  • Persistently increased pressurethat reacts poorly to common medications
  • May be associated with palpitations, tremors, sweating, headaches

Disorder of sodium-potassium balance

  • Low potassium — causes muscle weakness, cramps, fatigue
  • Frequent urination and thirst (impaired water and salt management)
  • Typical of primary hyperaldosteronism (Conn's syndrome)

Excessive production of stress hormones

  • Typistically in pheochromocytoma (tumor producing catecholamines)
  • Symptoms: palpitationshyperhidrosis, sweating, anxiety, pallor, attacks of high pressure
  • Feelings of panic without apparent cause

Increased or decreased cortisol levels

  • Cushing's syndrome: weight gain (especially in the face and torso), round face (“moonlike”), thinning of the skin, bruises, diabetes, muscle weakness, menstrual disorders, psychological changes
  • Cortisol deficiency (Addison's disease)symptoms: fatigue, weight loss, low pressure, skin pigmentation, nausea

Rare hormonal manifestations

  • Changes in libido, hair growth in women (due to overproduction of androgens)
  • Disorders of the menstrual cycle
  • Gynecomastia in men (rarely)

When should you pay attention?

If they appear in you repeatedly bouts of high pressure, unexplained heart palpitations, unusual fatigue If there are changes in the appearance of the body for no apparent reason, it is appropriate to consult an endocrinologist. In the case of familial occurrence of similar problems (e.g. pheochromocytoma), the examination is also recommended as a preventive measure.

Why is diagnosis complicated?

Many of the symptoms of adrenal gland disorders overlap with common conditions -- stress, menopause, fatigue syndrome, increased sugar levels or heart problems. Therefore, it may take a longer time before a correct diagnosis is made. Our center specializes in these cases — even in the so-called “. incidentalomas (incidentally found adrenal tumors) we can determine whether the finding is hormonally active and whether it requires treatment.

What to do next?

If you suspect any of the symptoms, the first step is consultation with a specialist. During the initial conversation with the doctor, we will assess the general condition, conduct laboratory tests and suggest further examinations. Diagnostics are quick and accurate in our center.
