diagnostics

Diagnosis of adrenal tumors in our center is based on the latest knowledge and international recommendations. Thanks to state-of-the-art laboratory and instrumentation, we can perform all necessary examinations quickly and reliably. Our team of experts work closely together to make the diagnosis as accurate as possible and in a short time.

Laboratory (biochemical) examination

The first step is often to determine hormone levels in the blood and urine. In our center we carry out specialized tests according to the suspicion of a specific disease.

What we measure

  • Catecholamines and metanephrines — suspected pheochromocytoma.
  • Cortisol and ACTH— on suspicion of Cushing's syndrome.
  • Aldosterone and renin — suspected primary hyperaldosteronism (Conn's syndrome).
  • Other hormonal indicators Including sex hormones according to the specific situation.

Preparation of the patient:

Some tests require specific preparation. The patient always receives detailed instructions from us, such as:

  • sleep mode before taking,
  • 24-hour urine collection with the supplied container,
  • correct and appropriate diet before various tests
  • skipping certain medications, smoking, alcohol, etc.

Imaging methods

We have modern MRI right in the building. Thus, the examination can take place without unnecessary waiting - in urgent cases even on weekends.

Methods used

  • CT and MR scans — primary anatomical display.
  • Ultrasound of the abdomen — available indicative examinations.
  • PET/CT, PET/MR and MIBG scintigraphy — functional imaging methods when specific tumors are suspected.

Radiopharmaceuticals

We recommend for example 18F-FDG, 68GA-DOTATOC, 18F-DOPA and Other radiopharmaceuticals in cooperation with professional workplaces and specialized centers in the Czech Republic.

Note Specialized imaging tests are not handled by the patient himself — ordering and logistics are provided by us.

Functional (stress) tests

We verify some hormonal functions with so-called stress tests directly in our center. The patient is under professional supervision during the test.

Examples of Functional Tests

  • Clonidine test — if pheochromocytoma or paraganglioma is suspected.
  • ACTH stimulation test — to assess adrenal function.

The course of the test

  • The patient remains at rest, pressure is measured, blood is taken in time.
  • He is always given clear instructions — e.g. be on an empty stomach, do not take medication, do not smoke, do not drive after the test, etc.

Not sure how best to proceed?

Every case is different. If you are not sure how to proceed further and suspect an adrenal tumor, please contact us. Together, we will assess the situation and recommend the next professional procedure — quickly, factually and in partnership.

Genetic examination

For some types of tumors (e.g. incidence in young patients, multiple tumors), we mediate genetic testing.

What genetics can reveal:

  • congenital syndromes (eg BUT, VHL),
  • mutations in genes (ex. SDH, RIGHT, VHL in pheochromocytoma and paragangliomas),
  • other hereditary predisposition.

We cooperate with renowned genetic institutes, including the Institute of Endocrinology in Prague. The results help in the choice of treatment as well as the follow-up of patients and their families.

Pathology and second reading of samples

If the tumor has been removed at another site, we will arrange for expert assessment of the histological sample by our leading pathologists. Accurate determination of the type of tumor is crucial for the correct choice of further treatment.

What to expect — the course of diagnosis

1. First consultation

The doctor will discuss the difficulties with you in detail, medical history and schedule an examination.

2. Samples and tests

  • At the appointed time, you will undergo blood sampling or functional tests.
  • If there is a need to collect urine, you will be given a container and instructions.

3. Imaging examination

We arrange the term CT, MR or PET within our company or with workplaces within the Czech Republic.

4. Outcome consultation

  • We will evaluate all findings (often discussed at a multidisciplinary meeting).
  • We will explain the diagnosis and recommend further steps.

What follows next?

If the finding is confirmed, we proceed with the treatment and provide the patient with detailed explanations, instructions and follow-up.
