Laboratory (biochemical) examination

The first step is often to determine hormone levels in the blood and urine. At our center, we conduct specialized tests based on the suspected condition.

What we measure

Catecholamines and metanephrines — suspected pheochromocytoma.
Cortisol and ACTH— suspected Cushing's syndrome.
Aldosterone and renin — suspected primary hyperaldosteronism (Conn's syndrome).
Other hormonal markers Including sex hormones, depending on the specific situation.

Patient preparation:

Some tests require specific preparation. We always provide patients with detailed instructions, such as:

rest requirements before testing,
24-hour urine collection using the provided container,‍
following a specific diet before certain tests,
avoiding certain medications, smoking, alcohol, etc.

Imaging methods

We have a modern MRI scanner right in the building. This allows examinations to take place without unnecessary waiting—even on weekends in urgent cases.

Methods used

CT and MRI scans — primary anatomical imaging.
Abdominal ultrasound — available for indicative examinations.
PET/CT, PET/MRI, and MIBG scintigraphy — functional imaging methods used when specific tumors are suspected.

Radiopharmaceuticals

We recommend for example 18F-FDG, 68GA-DOTATOC, 18F-DOPA, and other radiopharmaceuticals in cooperation with professional facilities and specialized centers in the Czech Republic.

Note Specialized imaging tests are not arranged by the patient—we handle all scheduling and logistics.

Functional (stress) tests

We perform various hormonal stress tests directly at our center. Patients are under professional supervision throughout the entire procedure.

Examples of Functional Tests

Clonidine suppression test — if pheochromocytoma or paraganglioma is suspected.
ACTH stimulation test — to assess adrenal function.

Test procedure

The patient remains at rest, blood pressure is monitored, and blood samples are collected at specific intervals.
Patients are always given clear instructions, such as fasting, avoiding certain medications, not smoking, and not driving after the test.

Genetic testing

For certain types of tumors (e.g., in young patients or cases of multiple tumors), we facilitate genetic testing.

What genetic testing can reveal:

hereditary syndromes (e.g. MEN, VHL),
gene mutations (e.g., SDH, RET, VHL) in pheochromocytoma and paragangliomas),
other hereditary predisposition.

We collaborate with renowned genetic institutes, including the Institute of Endocrinology in Prague. The results help guide treatment choices as well as the follow-up care for patients and their families.

Pathology and second opinion on samples

If the tumor was removed at another facility, we will arrange for an expert assessment of the histological sample by our leading pathologists. An accurate determination of the tumor type is crucial for selecting the correct follow-up treatment.

What to expect — the diagnostic process

1. Initial consultation

The doctor will discuss your symptoms and medical history in detail and schedule the necessary examinations.

2. Samples and tests

At the scheduled time, you will undergo blood draws or functional tests.
If a urine sample is required, you will be provided with a container and instructions.

3. Imaging examinations

We will arrange your CT, MRI, or PET scan either within our facility or at partner locations across the Czech Republic.

4. Follow-up consultation

We will evaluate all findings (often discussed during a multidisciplinary team meeting).
We will explain the diagnosis and recommend the next steps.

What happens next?

If the diagnosis is confirmed, we will proceed with treatment and provide the patient with detailed explanations, instructions, and follow-up care.
